Basic Introduction of Positive Pressure Enclosure Purge System

The positive pressure purge device is applicable to all positive pressure enclosure type motors used in explosive hazardous environments. The system performs rapid purging before motor startup to effectively displace flammable and explosive gases trapped inside the equipment cavity. Purge flow rate and duration are generally tested and preset by the motor manufacturer.

After completing the ventilation purge cycle, the system switches to automatic leakage compensation mode, which automatically adjusts pressure according to pressure fluctuations within the motor housing. The automatic compensation system maintains continuous stable positive pressure inside the equipment, preventing external flammable and explosive gases from infiltrating the motor cavity after startup.

Once the motor enters leakage compensation mode, it can be started and stopped at any time without repeating the purge process. The positive pressure system monitors cavity pressure in real time during equipment operation; operating status can be remotely transmitted via dry contact switch signals and indicated by local signal lamps.

This system consists of two components: a control unit and an RLV pressure relief unit.

Basic Technical Parameters

The TYPZ explosion-proof positive pressure purging system bears explosion-proof mark Ex db eb [pxb Gb] IIC T6. Both enclosure and junction box reach IP65 protection class. Its 316 stainless steel housing delivers outstanding corrosion resistance. Adopting 4-CLAPS automatic leakage compensation operation mode, it matches clean, dry, oil-free compressed air or inert gas with supply pressure 4-10 bar and gas impurity particle size ≤5μm. Purge time ranges 0-99 minutes adjustable by motor model. It provides complete leakage compensation flow specs with max flow 5000 NL/min under 5 barg inlet pressure. The unit shall be vertically installed per drawings, ideal for positive pressure protection of various explosion-proof motors.

The system installation components are shown in the figure below, which shall comply with the specific requirements specified in the product operation manual.
  1. Rigid metal pipes are recommended for gas pipeline connections. The air supply pipes and fittings are specified as follows:
  • Model 1ZY & 2ZY Series: 1/2″ Female NPT threaded connection, minimum air supply pipe size 15 mm (1/2″);
  • Model 6ZY Series: 1″ Female NPT threaded connection, minimum air supply pipe size 25 mm (1″);
  • Model 8ZY Series: 2″ Female NPT threaded connection, minimum air supply pipe size 50 mm (2″);

    Gas signal pipe: 1/8″ Female NPT.

  1. Install the pressure relief unit at a proper position with the exhaust port pointing downward.

Indication & Control:

The system operating status is displayed locally via indicator lights on the control unit, while remote signal transmission is realized through dry switch contacts.

The terminal box is Ex e increased safety type, with a maximum contact capacity of 250V/4A.
  1. Alarm / PressurizationWhen terminals 1#–3# are closed, the internal cavity pressure of the motor exceeds 150Pa. When the pressure drops below 150Pa, terminals 1#–3# open, which can be used as the low cavity pressure alarm and motor shutdown signal. Under this condition, motor interlock terminals 7#–9# open synchronously. Terminals 1#–2# perform opposite switching logic to terminals 1#–3#.
  2. Intermediate Pressure AlarmWhen terminals 4#–6# are closed, the motor internal cavity pressure is higher than 500Pa. When the pressure falls below 500Pa, terminals 4#–6# open to output a low pressure warning signal. Terminals 4#–5# have inverse logic compared with terminals 4#–6#.
  3. Motor InterlockWhen terminals 7#–9# are closed, the system enters automatic leakage compensation mode and the motor is permitted to start and operate. When terminals 7#–9# open, the motor shuts down. Terminals 8#–10# share identical signal logic with terminals 7#–9#.The system purge signal output is an optional function, which is not configured by factory default.
  4. System purge signal output is optional and disabled by factory default.

The TYPZ positive pressure purging system is equipped with a standard system status display circuit, covering six full operating states: Ventilation Not Timing, Ventilation Timing, Allow Start, Medium Pressure Alarm, Low Pressure Alarm, Interlock Shutdown. Multi-circuit contacts of low pressure alarm, motor interlock and start permission realize logic interlock, with terminals 1-2,1-3,4-5,4-6,7-9,8-10 switching on and off separately. Dual-color indicators clearly reflect working conditions: red light for pressure fault, green for normal air supply, yellow for ventilation timing, enabling on-site staff to quickly identify interlock and alarm signals and guarantee safe start-stop control of explosion-proof equipment.

The TYPZ series positive pressure purging system has 3 specifications: 2ZY, 6ZY and 8ZY, adopting a modular split design of main system and relief valve (RLV) for flexible installation adaptation. The main system width ranges from 400mm to 850mm, height from 400mm to 570mm, with configurable ports from 1/2 NPT to 2 NPT. Matching relief valves grow in size with model upgrades; the heaviest version has a 20kg main body and a 60kg relief valve with robust structure.
